Relationships & Sex & Health Education (RSHE)
Intent
At Cropthorne with Charlton CofE First School, we understand that children must be provided with an education that prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. A key part of this relates to relationships and health education, which must be delivered to every first school pupil. Relationships education focuses on giving pupils the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships, and to build their self-efficacy. Health education focuses on equipping pupils with the knowledge they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing. We understand our responsibility to deliver a high-quality and age-appropriate relationships, sex and health curriculum for all our pupils. Our Relationships, Sex and Health education will mainly be delivered through our PSHE (Jigsaw Scheme), but also Computing, Science and PE; however, where other high quality curriculum links can be made, we will use these to broaden and deepen our children's understanding.
Implementation
RSHE education is the school subject through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to stay healthy, safe, and thrive now and in the future. The Jigsaw scheme we use at Cropthorne enables opportunities for pupils to develop critical thinking and relationship skills in safe, non-judgmental environment. This is a spiral curriculum that builds on prior learning.
In the Autumn term, the children will be learning about ‘Being me in my World’ and ‘Celebrating Difference’. This is a theme the whole school will be following, just at age appropriate levels. Please look at our RSHE curriculum for further details.
In the Spring term, the children will be learning about ‘Dreams and Goals’ and Healthy Me’ again, all coverage is age appropriate.
In the Summer term, the children will be learning about ‘Relationships’ and Changing Me’. Relationships will be covering what a healthy relationship looks and feels like and changing me will discuss not only the changes to their bodies but also how this links to feelings and emotions.
Impact
At Cropthorne with Charlton C of E First School our vision for RSHE is that every child is happy, safe and healthy. We aim to equip children with the internal discipline, skills, knowledge and attitudes to make decisions in life. We hope that all children will make healthy, active choices that will keep their minds and bodies healthy. We hope that the children at Cropthorne with Charlton C of E First School will enjoy safe and positive relationships, be aspirational and celebrate diversity. Effective RSHE can make a significant contribution to the development of personal skills needed by pupils to establish and maintain relationships. RSHE will ensure children and young people are encouraged to understand the importance of stable, loving relationships, respect, love, and care. It also enables young people to make responsible and informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.
RSHE will be approached through evidence-based, best practice principles to ensure the highest impact on improving pupil health, wellbeing, safeguarding and lifelong outcomes.
