Safer Internet Day
7th February 2025
Dear Parents
Safer internet day – Tuesday 11th February 2025
On Tuesday 11th February, it is Safer Internet Day. Over 180 countries take part and the aim is to raise awareness of online issues and make the internet a safer place. With the rise of smartphones, social media, and other online platforms, children have more access to the internet than ever before. While we’re fortunate to have technology that helps our children learn and connect with others, it also comes with its own set of risks.
A great example of how schools are addressing these challenges can be seen in the recent documentary ‘Swiped: The School that Banned Smartphones’. Though this focuses on older children, it offers valuable lessons for all parents. The documentary reminds us of the importance of setting boundaries and making thoughtful decisions when it comes to children’s access to devices. While our children may not yet be using smartphones in the same way, it’s always wise to be prepared for when they do.
Here are some tips to help you keep your child safe online:
- Set Clear Rules – Establish guidelines for screen time, which websites or apps are appropriate, and when devices should be put away.
- Encourage Open Communication – Talk with your child regularly about their online experiences and make sure they know they can come to you with any concerns.
- Use Parental Controls – Many devices and apps have built-in parental controls to limit what your child can access. Make sure these are activated to keep their online activities safe and appropriate.
- Model Safe Behaviour – Show your child how to use technology responsibly. Be mindful of your own screen time and online interactions to set a positive example.
- Stay Informed – As new apps and websites pop up, take the time to learn about them. This will help you stay ahead of potential risks.
- Remember, keeping our children safe online is a shared responsibility. By staying informed, setting boundaries, and keeping the conversation open, we can help ensure they navigate the digital world safely.
