Welcome Back
Thu 05 Sep 2019Thursday 5th September 2019
Dear Parents,
Welcome Back!
We have had a great start to the new school year and the children have all come back enthusiastic to learn and looking extremely smart in their school uniform. Most importantly – well done to our new Reception children! They have had a fantastic first few days– they have settled brilliantly and I know that everyone is really proud of them. I have been really impressed as well, on how responsible the older children have been, Year 1 included, in looking after our youngest pupils and how polite and courteous they are being. Thank you, children!
I am sure that 2019-20 will be an exciting year and will enable us to continue to embed some of the excellent practices we have been working on over the last year, in order to continue to raise pupil outcomes. We are all looking forward to the year ahead.
Weekly Letters
Our staff team will continue to endeavour to keep you as well informed as possible via our weekly class letters. These are extremely important as they detail information about events which will be happening in your child’s class in the weeks ahead. We also publish a weekly School Newsletter to help keep everyone informed about what is happening in school. All of these letters are also displayed on the noticeboard on the playground outside Mrs Hunt’s Classroom and are also easily accessible on our School Website, www.cropthorneschool.org Please do check regularly, and if you find you are not receiving these weekly updates, please contact Mrs Evans so we can explore why this might be.
School Photographs
Individual and sibling photographs will be taking place next week on Thursday 12th September, the school hall will be open for pre-school siblings from 8.40am. Please ensure children come to school wearing their school jumper or cardigan on that day.
Medicines
Can we please remind parents that if your child suffers with asthma, then they need to have their inhalers in school at all times. Many thanks. We can administer medication but please remember that staff do this on a voluntary basis. This can only be done on completion of a consent form available in the school office. All medicine should be provided directly to the school office along with the completed consent form, please do not take or send in medicines to classrooms.
Absence
If your child is absent from school due to illness, could you please telephone school first thing in the morning to inform us. If your child is off poorly for more than one day, please indicate how long you expect them to be off for and keep the school office updated if it is any longer. In cases of diarrhoea or vomiting children should remain off school for a minimum of 48 hours after the last episode to prevent the spread of infection. In case of planned absence for exceptional circumstances please complete a Leave of Absence Request Form which is available from the school office detailing the request. Please read the form carefully before completion.
Playground before and after school
Please remember children should not use the play equipment or enter the Forest School Area (the area past the saplings at the top of the field.) The children are always supervised by trained staff when they use these facilities during the school day to make sure they use them safely. Children should therefore not use them before or after school for safety reasons. It is great to see children riding their bicycles and scooters to school but we do ask they continue to push them once they have entered the school grounds for everyone’s safety. Thank you.
Upcoming Events
This year’s Harvest Festival is due to take place on Wednesday 2nd October at 9.30am when the whole school will be going to St Michael’s church in Cropthorne for what is always a lovely, lively celebration and a real highlight of the school year. You are always very generous in sending in harvest gifts. This year we will again be supporting the work of the Foodbank and will let parents know as soon as possible which items the Foodbank would find the most helpful for us to send along.
We will host our Open Morning for current and prospective parents on Tuesday 22nd October between 10am and 12pm, please do come along for a taste of life at our school. Our first Parent Consultations will take place immediately after the half term break on Wednesday 6th & Thursday 7th November, although of course, should you wish to discuss anything with your child’s class teacher before then, please don’t hesitate to book an appointment.Extra-curricular clubs
We are very proud of the range of extra-curricular after school clubs that we offer during the course of the year, given the relatively small size of our school. A separate letter will be issued in due course detailing the clubs on offer this term which will run from the week commencing Monday 23rd September until the week ending Friday 22nd November. Please note there will be no clubs running during the week commencing 4th November, which immediately follows the half term break. Wrap around care will run as normal, if you wish to use this facility.
Achievements Assembly
Most of all, we of course look forward to celebrating the children’s many successes over the course of the term. Our popular Achievements Assembly will continue on Friday mornings, where we also really enjoy hearing all about the wonderful achievements from home which take place outside of school. As in previous years, Reception children will not attend Achievements Assembly initially; however Miss Hughes will of course update you before they begin to do so. Year 1 children in Cats class will continue to attend along with the rest of the school. Parents as always are most welcome to join us each Friday morning at 9.00am to celebrate with us. The first Achievement Assembly of this year will take on Friday 13th September. We look forward to seeing many of you there.
Yours Sincerely,

Whole School Letter
Fri 07 Jun 2019Thursday 6th June 2019
Dear Parents,
It has been a really fantastic first few days back at school following the half-term break, especially for our youngest children who enjoyed an awe-inspiring visit to the circus on their first day back!
Number 8 Schools Showcase
Following on from an Art Workshop which Years 2 & 5 recently took part in, a number of our pupils had their artwork selected by a local artist for display at Number 8 in Pershore. Please do visit Number 8 from Thursday 27th June to Wednesday 17th July, from 10am - 4pm Mon - Sat (and most evenings when they have an event or film screening) to see if you can spot the artwork belonging to Emily A (Y2), Charlie, Jacob, Jessie, Millie and Chloe (Y5s). Well done to them all.
Sports Day
Sports Day will take place on the afternoon of Thursday 27th June, further details on specific arrangements and timings will follow in due course. Our Achievement Assembly on the following day will be a ‘Sports Day’ themed assembly, starting at 9am as normal. I am always delighted to see so many of our families attending school events to support all of the children in their fantastic achievements.
Punctuality
Thank you so much to the vast majority of our parents who ensure that children arrive in school by 8.50am every day. We understand that everyone can run late occasionally but please be aware that regularly arriving at school after this time can be disruptive to other children who are already organised for the day ahead and are ready to learn. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.
Weekly Class Letters
The Summer Term is always an extremely busy one with lots of events taking place throughout the school. These events are detailed on our weekly class letters which are available on the school website on our class pages: https://www.cropthorneschool.org/class-pages/
You will also find regular updates of activities children have recently taken part in here too.
Weekly class letters are also posted on our ‘Bulletin Board’ next to the entrance to Mrs Komor’s classroom and issued via email. If you find you are not receiving these emails please do pop in and see Mrs Evans, who will be happy to try to find out why this is.
Classroom Arrangements for 2019/20
Children have been very excited this week to find out who will be teaching them next year and which adults they will be working with. We are now pleased to be able to detail arrangements for the next academic year below:
Cats Class: Miss Hughes will be remaining in her current classroom for next year with Reception & Year 1. Mrs Denney, Mrs Harrington & Mrs Smythe will continue to work alongside Miss Hughes in Cats Class.
Chimps Class: Mrs Komor will be teaching Year 2 and Year 3, and will be moving to the classroom which is currently home to Mrs Hunt. Mrs Castle and Mrs Freeman will be working with this class next year.
Cockatoos Class: Mrs Jones will be remaining in her current classroom for next year with Year 4, supported by Mrs Annis and Mr Ramus.
Chameleons Class: Mrs Hunt and her Year 5 class will be moving to the classroom which is currently used by Mrs Komor and Year 2. Mrs Brown will remain with our oldest pupils.
Children will be fully prepared for their move ‘up’ the school and will spend the some of their day in their new classroom on their transition day on Wednesday 3rd July so they will be more familiar with where they are heading next year. This date also coincides with the Year 5 transition day to their Middle Schools, letters detailing all arrangements will be issued directly from the Middle Schools prior to this date. We are also looking forward to welcoming our new Reception children for the final day of their transition programme before they join us in September. Please look out for a letter from your child’s teacher for next year which will include more information.
Should you have any questions regarding the upcoming year please feel free to approach your child’s new teacher who will be very happy to help with any queries you may have, alternatively, if you have not met them before please do feel free to introduce yourself and say hello!
Thank you for your continued support.

Whole School Letter 20.12.18
Fri 21 Dec 2018Thursday 20th December 2018
Dear Parents,
We have enjoyed a truly memorable end of term at Cropthorne with Charlton CE First! Year 5 launched our advent celebrations with their superb clarinet performance which also included excellent performances from our talented pianists ranging from our dedicated (and brave) beginners to some virtuoso recitals too! Year 3 then treated us to a wonderful assembly, working with Mr Graham Pharo to present ‘The Gospel According to Sheep’ which enthralled and entertained the rest of the school in equal measure.
In other news, Year 3-5 enjoyed a spectacular production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at The Birmingham Rep. Theatre, they loved their Ice-Creams donated by our PTFA too! The Lempen Theatre visited us too this week to put on a stunning Puppet Show which really captured the children’s imaginations. Thank you again for all the contributions which make these memories possible for the children. We would also like to thank our dedicated PTFA for organising a very successful ‘Movie Night’ last week. A member of staff from the School Library Service has also visited us to donate books and congratulate our pupils on winning the Summer Reading Challenge, incredibly for the second year running! With nearly 250 schools in Worcestershire, this is a fantastic achievement of which all the children should be very proud, thank you for all of your support too! On Friday, Years 4&5 visited The Old School Room in Charlton to sing Carols and some Nativity songs for members of our community at The Chattery. We were very proud of the children and it was great to see our pupils providing so much joy to the audience there. The fun and festivities continued yesterday when we all sat together in the school hall for our Whole School Christmas dinner wearing our Christmas Jumpers. We were so very thankful to all the parent helpers who gave up their time to help serve dinner, it was really appreciated by everyone. This was followed by surprise visit from a person who is very busy this time of year, who dropped in to deliver gifts which had been kindly prepared by some generous Elves!
Of course the highlight of this December was undoubtedly the absolutely fantastic performance of a ‘Noisy Nativity’ put on by Cats Class at Fladbury Church. The children loved preparing for and putting on such an amazing show accompanied by some brilliant singing from the rest of the school and in particularly the Choir. I would like to thank all of the dedicated staff and volunteers who were involved in supporting and encouraging the children to achieve such a feat, and I have been delighted to pass on all the positive comments from parents, friends and relatives who attended the shows. Well done to all of Cats!
Looking ahead to 2019, school will remain closed on Monday 7th January as all staff will be taking part in training focussed upon the development of children’s understanding and use of vocabulary, which will undoubtedly help us to continue to improve our strong provision in this area. Extra-curricular clubs will begin during the week commencing Monday 28th January and information detailing the clubs on offer will be issued early in the New Year. Our next set of Parent Consultation Evenings are scheduled for immediately after the half-term break, on Tuesday 26th & Wednesday 27th February, although should you wish to discuss anything with your child’s teacher before then, please don’t hesitate to make an appointment. Further information will of course follow nearer to the time.
Tomorrow, our friend the Reverend Sarah Dangerfield will lead our traditional Carol Service at St Michael’s Church from 11.15am until 12.00pm, where we will all gather to mark the closing of this calendar year at school with what is always a lovely service. Family members and the local community are extremely welcome to join us all and the children will be dismissed from the Church when the service finishes. School will reopen for children on Tuesday 8th January 2019 and we look forward to seeing you all then. Until then, on behalf of everyone here at Cropthorne with Charlton CE First I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
Yours sincerely,
Rob Bothma

Thank you from Pershore Food Bank
Tue 16 Oct 201816th October 2018
Dear Pupils of Cropthorne with Charlton First School
Thank you very much for thinking of Pershore Foodbank for your Harvest Festival collection. The amount of food that you donated to us is quite staggering and will help to feed many families in Pershore and the surrounding villages.
Last Tuesday the volunteers were very busy sorting, weighing and storing the food you and you might like to know the total weight was 59.05 which is roughly 120 meals.
Frontline care staff eg. health visitors, CAB and church pastoral workers give vouchers to people who are hungry because they are in crisis. Clients then exchange the voucher for three days supply of food at the foodbank St Andrews Parish Centre, Church Street in Pershore.
Clients are offered a hot drink and biscuits and a volunteer will sit and have an informal chat. This helps to make them feel much better. We offer a listening ear and also point them, called "signposting", to other help.
Finally we wish them well and offer them a short prayer
Lynne Raymer

Classroom Arrangements for 2018/19

Safeguarding Information
Safeguarding of our pupils is of course our highest priority as a school and following a recent redistribution of roles on the school’s governing body we felt it timely to share with you our key staff members, and members of the governing body, who form our safeguarding team here at Cropthorne-with-Charlton CE First. Please take time to read the information attached.
Sports Day
Sports Day will take place on Thursday 28th June this term, further details on specific arrangements and timings will of course follow, however we did wish to give advance notice that our Achievement Assembly on the following day will be a ‘Sports Day’ themed assembly, starting at 2.15pm as Cats Class will be attending a Multi-skills Festival during the morning, parents are of course warmly invited to attend as normal. I am always delighted to see so many of our families attending all of our events to support all of our children and support them in all of their fantastic achievements.
Dragonfly and Totem Pole
The final additions to our fantastic pond area have now been installed, these have been hand-made for our school hence their later installation. As the weather has become warmer the children have been making full use of this amazing space and it was great to see Miss Hughes’ class almost bursting with delight as they encountered their first newt this week! Look out for the photographs in our weekly newsletter.

Whole School Letter 09/05/18
Wed 09 May 2018Wednesday 9th May 2018
Dear Parents,
We have enjoyed a fantastic and very busy start to the summer term here at Cropthorne with Charlton CE First School. Of course the sun shone brightly with record breaking temperatures over the Mayday Bank Holiday and we all were lucky to see our school and village full of visitors at the Cropthorne Walkabout. It was lovely to hear the positive comments about the appearance and feel of the school and the children’s wonderful work on display. Cats class contributed to the ‘feel-good factor’ by treating us all to an amazing performance of their traditional Maypole Dance! They entered the playground beaming from ear to ear and gratefully received mirrored smiles from the huge audience which came to cheer them on. A brand new ‘Spider Web’ dance was the culmination of their superb routine and the hot weather ensured that they all eagerly gulped down Miss Hughes’ refreshments in their classroom afterwards. They all made us very proud and I would like to thank Miss Hughes, Mrs Freeman, Mrs Kay and Mrs Denney for their hard work. Well done everyone!
I also wish to thank our PTFA for their fabulous efforts this weekend and to everyone who baked cakes, gave up their time and kindly volunteered to help at the Walkabout. They managed to raise an excellent £444.72, thank you again to all involved.
The children were very proud to show off their learning in our recent Mathematics workshops as well as many of our pupils being very busy attending visits as part of our enhanced curriculum, with memorable experiences at Sandfield Farm, Compton Verney, and Singers Hill Synagogue to name just a few! Thank you for your termly voluntary contributions of £25 which help make visits like these possible.
The Summer Term is always a very busy one at Cropthorne as we take advantage of the warmer weather and partake in many outdoor activities. We do acknowledge it can be a challenge to keep track of absolutely everything that is happening in school especially alongside everything else too! The noticeboard outside Mrs Jones’ classroom is frequently updated and also please do take the opportunity to look at the school website where you will find lots of information about what is happening in your child’s class. All weekly letters are available on class pages, as is the weekly school newsletter on the homepage. We also publish photographs showing highlights from our activities and visits on the school website, so please do take a look at all of the exciting things the children have been doing, I’m sure the children would be happy to talk you through it all!
All clubs begin this week, they will finish at 4pm and will run every week from now until the 22nd June. Children will all be dismissed from the front entrance as the school gates are locked from 3.15pm for the safety of the children who remain on the school site.
I hope the sun continues to shine and everyone enjoys a great term ahead.
Yours Sincerely,

'Oink' Production Dates & Timings
Tue 13 Mar 2018Monday 12th March 2018
Dear Parents,
OINK PRODUCTION DATES & TIMES
Rehearsals for ‘Oink!’ are now in full swing as we rapidly approach the dates of our performances. Thank you to all of you who have worked with the children to help them learn their lines and prepare for the production, which I am sure you are aware will take place on Thursday 22nd March at 1.30pm & Friday 23rd March at 6.30pm at Number 8. The children are extremely excited and over the last few weeks they have danced, sang and rehearsed with superb enthusiasm and huge smiles on their faces. The children have been working extremely hard on their parts and I know as always here at Cropthorne they will enjoy the wonderful support from all of our families.
Please make a note of the important information outlined below;
On Tuesday 20th March all of Years 3, 4 & 5 will travel to No 8 during the school day for our Technical Rehearsal. Children will eat lunch at school as normal.
On Wednesday the 21st March all the children will be rehearsing in the morning at No 8. We have arranged a coach to transport them to and from No 8. Please ensure that your child has an additional snack and drink in a separate bag, which they can take with them. Children will eat lunch at school as normal.
On Thursday 22nd March all the children will be transported to No 8 after lunch, by coach, in time for the afternoon performance. All children will need to bring a packed lunch from home unless a hot dinner has been ordered from Pershore High and if this is the case they will supply a packed lunch. All children will need to be collected at 3.00pm from the rear exit of No 8, as we are no longer permitted to dismiss from the stage area inside the auditorium for safety reasons. In order to avoid the area from becoming overcrowded we request that families please send only one adult to collect children if possible, thank you in advance for your co-operation. There will be no Afterschool Care or Clubs on this day.
On Friday 23rd March all children will need to be brought to the rear of No 8 at 6.15pm and collected at 8.00pm. Again, all children will need to be collected from the rear exit of No 8, where we again ask that only one adult is sent to collect where possible.
We will as ever be recording the performance and DVDs will be available to purchase after the Easter Break, further information regarding this will follow. The children have really enjoyed preparing their performance for you and we hope you will enjoy it as much as they have!
Yours sincerely,
Rob Bothma

Whole School Letter 10.1.18
Wed 10 Jan 2018Wednesday 10th January 2018
Dear Parents,
It has been fantastic to see everyone back in school this past week and it now very much feels like the spring term is very much ‘up and running’! We hope that everyone enjoyed the festive period and had the valuable opportunity to spend some family time together. All of us at Cropthorne with Charlton First were appreciative of all of the warm wishes and very generous Christmas gifts which were gratefully received at the end of last term, thank you.
Of course the spring term at Cropthorne inevitably brings much excitement and anticipation as the thoughts of the children and staff begin to turn to our whole school production at Number 8 in Pershore. This year we will be immersing ourselves in the magical world of fairy tales with our performance of ‘Oink!’, a story which is (very loosely!) based upon the tale of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. The afternoon performance will take place on Thursday 22nd March, with the evening show taking place on Friday 23rd March. More detailed information on times and ticketing will be issued closer to the half term break.
We have been in awe of the progress made by the Gardens of Reflection team in completely transforming our pond area over the latter part of the last term. The project was predominately funded by a grant from the National Lottery ‘Awards for All’, and supported by donations from the Garfield Weston Foundation, The Rowlands Trust and our very own PTFA. The project is virtually complete with just one or two ‘finishing touches’ to be added soon, however the children will be getting their first experiences of the area this week. We also plan to open the area for our parents to view this Friday at the end of the school day, we’re sure it will be popular so please be patient if there is a small queue!
All the staff at Cropthorne returned on 3rd January to work on the school curriculum, which included exploration and development of methods of using ICT to further enhance learning for the children at our school. We are also continuing to develop the way we deliver our teaching of Mathematics and we will be offering opportunities for you to learn more about our work in this area over the coming months.
Information about some of our upcoming educational visits and visitors into school will also begin to arrive with you via our weekly class newsletters in the coming weeks and as always we will continue to try to give you as much notice as we possibly can. We do of course ask for a voluntary termly contribution of £25 which helps us to supplement these special experiences which enhance our children’s learning and provide them with memorable experiences which we hope they will carry with them well beyond their time at Cropthorne. We really would not be able to run anywhere near as many without your continuing and valued support.
Extra-curricular activity clubs begin on the 22nd January, these are detailed in a separate letter. Dance Club and Singing Club were specifically requested by our pupils at our School Council meetings, and we are happy to be able run them this term. Unfortunately numbers at some clubs are limited, and this will occasionally lead to some disappointment. Therefore we do ask that if you have been allocated a place at a club and decide not to take it up or to no longer attend for any reason, please let Mrs Evans know as soon as possible so we can quickly allocate the place to another child. Please note that clubs will not run during the week commencing 26th February due to our Parent Consultations taking place that week, on Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th February. Further information on booking a slot and timings will be issued in the preceding weeks.
Already this term, Alex Thoday, Mia Underwood, Jacob Standing and Jemma Diston from our School Council fully planned and ran their own assembly on the theme of Kindness, Years 3-5 enjoyed their rearranged but nonetheless still thrilling trip to see 101 Dalmatians, whilst Mr Komor, Year Five and our talented pianists treated us to a special music concert this morning, we were all very impressed by the musical skills on show! Well done to all involved!
As ever, we will do our best to keep you informed over the course of the term but if you think some information has not got through, please do check that Mrs Evans has your up to date contact details, especially if Santa Claus delivered a new mobile phone at Christmas!
We are all looking forward to our first Achievement Assembly of the term which will take place this Friday (12th January) which is always so brilliantly well attended, we look forward to seeing you there.
Yours sincerely,
Rob Bothma

Whole School Letter 19.12.17
Tue 19 Dec 2017Monday 18th December 2017
Dear Parents,
Incredibly, we find ourselves at the end of another wonderful term here at Cropthorne with Charlton CE First. Recent weeks have seen a flurry of festive activity, as well as more than a flurry of snow! I am sure one of the highlights for many of us was the truly spectacular performance of ‘A Wriggly Nativity’. The children performed and sang superbly and the joy they took in putting on such an amazing show was clear to see. I know all the staff are very proud of all of the children, and particularly of Cats class, and from all of the lovely comments from audience members it is clear we are not the only ones! I would like to thank everybody involved in putting on such a great show!
Last week we also enjoyed a visit from a special someone who is very busy at the moment but was able to stop and find time to deliver presents to all of our pupils at Cropthorne. We really appreciated his visit and especially all of the hard work put in by his many elves to make sure everyone received a gift. Thank you Elves! Despite the weather at the start of the week Pershore High delivered us a lovely Whole School Christmas Dinner, with all the children and staff looking great in their Christmas Jumpers. We were also very thankful to all the parents who came to help serve the children’s dinner; it all made for a fantastic atmosphere in the School Hall.
We are also thankful for the understanding and support shown during the challenging weather conditions at the start of last week. It was with great reluctance that we were forced to close in the interests of everyone’s safety. It is frustrating for us all when this happens but we hope that children and families were able to take the opportunity to enjoy playing in the snow together. We are pleased to report that we have been able to rearrange the Year 3, 4 & 5 visit to see 101 Dalmatians for the 5th January. (A separate letter will be sent out detailing the arrangements.)
On Friday, Years 4&5 visited The Old School Room in Charlton to sing beautifully for members of our community and we were also pleased to welcome the Lempen Puppet Theatre who put on a great show for Year 2. Christmas Craft morning for Cats class was also a real hit this morning and we are looking forward to the PTFA Christmas Disco later today. We are sure you will agree that the tireless work of our current PTFA committee has provided amazing experiences for the children at our school and they have raised funds to make our school an even better place to spend a childhood. We would like to thank them so much for all their hard work, dedication and passion over the past few years.
Of course, we do say a fond farewell to Mrs Abbi Denney at the end of this term as she begins her maternity leave. I know she is already looking forward to visiting us with her new addition in the new term! Mrs Jill Kay will be joining Cats class from January whilst Mrs Denney is away. Mrs Kay is an experienced teaching assistant who has worked in several primary schools across the country and is really looking forward to working with Cats class and with the rest of the children at lunch times. We know you will make her feel very welcome.
Reverend Sarah Dangerfield will lead our traditional Carol Service at St Michael’s Church tomorrow from 11.15am until 12.00pm, where we will take time to pause and reflect on this special time of year. Family members and the local community are most welcome to join us and the children will be dismissed from the Church at the end of what we are sure will be a lovely service. School will reopen for children on Thursday 4th January. Until then, on behalf of everyone here at Cropthorne with Charlton CE First I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
Yours sincerely,
Rob Bothma
